That uncertainty is one of the worst parts. You don’t want to call a technician for something you could have handled yourself, but you also don’t want to wait too long and make the problem worse. The good news is that most cases of AC not cooling come down to a short list of causes, and knowing what they are helps you figure out your next move quickly. Here’s what’s actually going on.
When your AC is working but not cooling, the system isn’t necessarily broken in a dramatic way. In fact, several of the most common causes are things that build up gradually — a filter that hasn’t been changed in months, an outdoor unit that’s been slowly getting blocked, or a refrigerant level that’s been dropping since last season. The system keeps running because most of these issues don’t shut it down — they just quietly rob it of its ability to cool.
That said, a few causes are more serious and can get worse the longer the system runs. So while it’s worth checking the easy stuff first, this isn’t something to leave alone for days hoping it resolves itself.
A clogged air filter is the single most common reason an AC stops cooling effectively. It sounds almost too simple, but it’s consistently what we find when a system is running but struggling to bring the temperature down.
Here’s why it matters so much: your AC pulls warm air from inside your home across the evaporator coil, where that air gets cooled and recirculated. Refrigerant is the substance that makes cooling possible. It cycles through your system, absorbing heat from the air inside your home and releasing it outside. When a capacitor fails, the motor it serves either won’t start at all or will run weakly and inefficiently. You might hear a humming sound from the outdoor unit without the fan spinning, or the system might short-cycle — turning on and off in rapid succession without ever reaching the set temperature.
